The ground-based meteorological observation
system

System Outline

The ground-based meteorological observation system consists of three observation stations and one monitoring station for surveillance and control of the observation stations.

The observation stations are located at the Okinawa Electromagnetic Technology Center (NICT Okinawa), the Ogimi Wind Profiler Facility (NICT Ogimi), and the Nago Precipitation Radar Facility (NICT Nago). Meteorological characteristics such as wind direction, wind speed, temperature, humidity, precipitation, solar radiation, and atmospheric pressure are observed, and the observation data is then collected and stored .

The system allows for full operation of the observation stations from the monitoring station at NICT Okinawa. Here data from each observation station is collected via the Internet, data is tabulated, images are created for Web publication, and data is stored; in addition, sensors and instruments installed at each station are continuously monitored .

Purpose of the System

Continuous ground-based observation of meteorological elements (including wind direction, wind speed, temperature, humidity, precipitation, solar radiation, and atmospheric pressure) is not only important in the monitoring of daily meteorological conditions but also serves as a tool for understanding long-term climatological variations .

The purpose of this system is to accumulate data through continuous, long-term observations of meteorological phenomena from three observation stations. Further, the collected observation data is also extremely important in verifying the performance of the various remote-sensing instruments under development at our Center.

Database

The data accumulated at the monitoring station are stored on the Computer Network System for Subtropical Environment Monitoring at NICT Okinawa and are available for research institutions.
