dvantages of a Bistatic Radar Network
1 Relative to conventional dual Doppler observations, the system is inexpensive and convenient.
2 Scientific or operational advantages include the simultaneous nature of bistatic measurements. In a conventional dual-Doppler observation, one to several minutes may elapse between observations in a particular region of an intense meso-scale weather phenomenon that changes over time, particularly far above the ground, where synchronization is more difficult. This particular region may occur between observations, invalidating traditional dual-Doppler retrievals. But, a single source of radiation in a bistatic network guarantees that particular points are observed from the various remote sites at exactly the same time. Because there is only one source of radiation, all the multiple-Doppler calculations can occur in the natural spherical geometry of a transmitting radar.
3 When two or three monostatic Doppler radars are used in dual observation, two or three frequencies in the C band are required. However, the bistatic-network method requires only one frequency, contributing to the more effective utilization of frequency bands.
