The 400-MHz-band wind profiler is highly sensitive not only to atmospheric turbulence, but also to precipitating particles.
These spectra were taken during periods of precipitation; the red area represents strong signals scattered from precipitating particles. Signals scattered by atmospheric turbulence and precipitating particles can be distinguished from each other relatively easily with the 400-MHz-band wind profiler. Therefore, even during precipitation, wind velocity and precipitation intensity can both be measured to a certain extent. Since rain falls downward, raindrops exhibit positive Doppler velocity with respect to the radar. In the data, the left-hand side of each figure shows the precipitation component.
